Dubai, United Arab Emirates: The first of Dubai's three palm-shaped islands is finally about to get its first residents. The Palm Jumeirah is a 12-square-mile island group which is known as the largest land-reclamation project in the world. It took about five years of hauling of millions of tons of Persian Gulf sand and quarried rock to build. It is scheduled to be fully completed in 2010 and will be home to about 60,000 residents and at least 50,000 workers in 32 hotels and dozens of shops and attractions. The project is costed at $14 billion and sets to rival Singapore and Hong Kong as a business hub. |
