The Indian goverment made many attempts to halt the auction of the memorabilia of Mahatma Gandhi but failed to do so. But no worry, it was Mr Vijay Mallya , Chairman of the United Breweries Group and Kingfisher Airlines who ended up winning the memorabilia for a price tag of $1.8 million (nearly Rs 9.3 crore) at a New York auction. The items won include his round rimmed spectacles, leather sandals, 1910 silver Zenith pocket watch and the brass bowl and plate. Vijay Mallya plans to donate the items to be placed in a museum. Vijay Mallya firm UB Group owns the Royal Challengers Bangalore team in the Indian Premier League. |

The high priced golden culinary herb saffron, made from crocus flowers, and used in cooking, may hold one of the keys to preventing the loss of sight in old age and could even help improve vision in people suffering from certain blinding eye diseases. A team found that saffron slows the loss of sight becuase the herb has remarkable effects on the genes which actually regulate the performance of the eye's key vision cells. |
